Event Categories

Organize your calendar events by category for better filtering and smarter notifications.

Categories help you organize events by type and can trigger different reminder behaviors. Learn how to use categories effectively.

Default Categories

Nook includes these built-in categories:

Using Categories

Assigning a Category

When creating or editing an event:

  1. Click the Category dropdown
  2. Select the appropriate category
  3. The event icon and color hint change
  4. Reminder settings adjust automatically

Category Colors

Categories add a subtle color hint to events. The primary color remains the attendee's color for easy identification.

Filtering by Category

To show only certain event types:

  1. Click Filter in the calendar toolbar
  2. Check/uncheck categories
  3. Calendar updates to show selected types

Useful for:

  • Seeing only medical appointments
  • Hiding work events on family view
  • Focusing on kids' activities

Category-Specific Reminders

Each category can have its own reminder settings.

Customizing Category Reminders

  1. Go to Settings > Notifications
  2. Scroll to Event Reminders
  3. Click on a category
  4. Set reminder times:
    • How far before to remind
    • Which channels to use
    • Additional reminders

Example Settings

Medical Events:

  • 1 day before (prepare, arrange transport)
  • 1 hour before (leave reminder)
  • Include location in notification

Sports Events:

  • 2 hours before (pack gear)
  • 30 minutes before (leave reminder)

Social Events:

  • 1 day before (RSVP reminder)
  • 2 hours before (get ready)

Creating Custom Categories

If the default categories don't fit your needs:

  1. Go to Settings > Calendar
  2. Click Manage Categories
  3. Click Add Category
  4. Set:
    • Name
    • Icon (from icon picker)
    • Default reminder times
  5. Save

Smart Category Features

Automatic Categorization

Nook can suggest categories based on:

  • Event title keywords
  • Location type
  • Past event patterns

Enable in Settings > Calendar > Auto-categorize events.

Category Statistics

See how your family spends time:

  1. Go to Calendar > Insights
  2. View breakdown by category
  3. See trends over time

Category Suggestions

When planning busy weeks, Nook may suggest:

  • "Lots of sports this weekโ€”need recovery time?"
  • "No family events scheduledโ€”plan something fun?"

Bulk Category Updates

To update categories for multiple events:

  1. Use Filter to find similar events
  2. Select multiple events (hold Shift + click)
  3. Click Bulk Edit
  4. Choose new category
  5. Apply changes

Tips

Be Consistent

Use the same category for similar events. "Soccer" should always be Sports, not sometimes General.

Keep It Simple

Don't create too many custom categories. 5-10 total is plenty for most families.

Review Periodically

As your family's activities change, update your category list and reminder settings.
