Roles & Permissions
Understand family roles in Nook and what each role can do within your family workspace.
Nook uses a simple role system to manage what family members can do within your workspace. This guide explains each role and its permissions.
Role Overview
| Role | Description | Who Should Have It |

| Owner | Full control of the workspace | The account creator |
| Adult | Can manage most things | Other parents/guardians |
| Child | Limited access | Kids and teens |
Owner Role
The Owner is the primary administrator of the family workspace.
Owners can:
- All Adult permissions, plus:
- Delete the family workspace
- Change billing settings
- Manage calendar integrations
- Export all family data
- Transfer ownership
Note: There can only be one Owner. To transfer ownership, go to Settings > Account > Transfer Ownership.
Adult Role
Adults are trusted family members who can manage day-to-day operations.
Adults can:
- Create, edit, and delete calendar events
- Create and manage meal plans
- Manage grocery lists
- Add and edit recipes
- Manage their own notification settings
- Create and edit profiles for children
- View all family data
Adults cannot:
- Delete the family workspace
- Change billing settings
- Manage calendar integrations
- Transfer ownership
Child Role
Children have limited access appropriate for younger family members.
Children can:
- View the family calendar
- View meal plans
- View their own events
- Mark grocery items as purchased
- Receive notifications (if enabled)
Children cannot:
- Create or delete events
- Modify meal plans
- Add or edit recipes
- Change settings
- Manage other profiles
Changing Roles
Only the Owner can change member roles:
- Go to Settings > Family
- Click on the member's profile
- Select the new role from the dropdown
- Click Save

*Adults can only manage children's profiles, not other adults.
Best Practices
Who Should Be an Owner
- The person who manages the household
- Someone who handles family logistics
- The account billing contact
Who Should Be an Adult
- Parents and guardians
- Older teens who help manage the household
- Other caregivers (grandparents, nannies)
Who Should Be a Child
- Younger children
- Teens who don't need management access
- Anyone who just needs to view information
Upgrading a Child to Adult
When a child is ready for more responsibility:
- Go to Settings > Family
- Click on their profile
- Add their email address
- Change role to Adult
- They'll receive an invitation to create their own login
This lets them:
- Manage their own notifications
- Create and edit events
- Help with meal planning
