Household Staples

Track items your household always needs and get alerts when they're running low.

Household staples are items you always want to have on hand. Track them in Nook to get low-stock alerts and easily add them to shopping lists.

What Are Staples?

Staples are recurring items your household regularly uses:

  • Milk, bread, eggs
  • Cooking oils, spices
  • Paper towels, toilet paper
  • Cleaning supplies
  • Personal care items

Unlike recipe ingredients, staples aren't tied to specific meals—they're always needed.

Staples vs. Recipe Ingredients

StaplesRecipe Ingredients
Always trackedTied to meal plans
Fixed quantitiesScaled to servings
Independent alertsGenerated per recipe
Ongoing itemsOne-time needs

Example

Olive oil as a staple:

  • Track how much you have
  • Alert when running low
  • Add to list with your usual quantity

Olive oil in a recipe:

  • "2 tablespoons olive oil"
  • Added when that meal is planned
  • Combined with other recipe needs

Both can coexist—staples for tracking supply, recipe ingredients for specific amounts.

Tips

Start Small

Begin with 10-15 essential staples. Add more as you identify patterns.

Be Realistic

Track items you actually buy regularly, not aspirational purchases.

Review Periodically

Remove staples you no longer use. Update quantities as needs change.

Use Categories

Proper categorization makes it easy to find items and shop efficiently.
