Notification Channels
Choose how you want to receive notifications: in-app, email, push, or SMS.
Nook supports multiple notification channels. Choose the methods that work best for your lifestyle and each family member can have their own preferences.
Available Channels
In-App Notifications
Notifications appear in the notification bell within Nook.
Best for:
- Seeing notifications when using the app
- Non-urgent reminders
- Keeping a notification history
Setup: Enabled by default, no setup required.
Email Notifications
Receive notifications via email.
Best for:
- Detailed notifications with full context
- Daily digests
- When you check email regularly
Setup: Uses your account email. No additional setup required.
Push Notifications
Browser or mobile notifications that appear even when Nook isn't open.
Best for:
- Time-sensitive reminders
- Immediate alerts
- When you're away from the app
Setup:
- Go to Settings > Notifications
- Click Enable Push Notifications
- Allow notifications in your browser
- Test with the Send Test button
SMS Notifications
Text messages sent to your phone.
Best for:
- Critical alerts
- When you might miss app/email notifications
- Urgent reminders
Setup:
- Go to Settings > Notifications
- Click Add Phone Number
- Enter your phone number
- Enter the verification code sent to your phone
- Enable SMS for desired notification types

Enabling Channels
Per Notification Type
Each notification type can use different channels:
- Go to Settings > Notifications
- Find the notification type (Events, Meals, Groceries)
- Toggle channels on/off for each type

Per-Member Preferences
Each family member controls their own notifications:
Setting Up Member Preferences
- Go to Settings > Family
- Click on a family member
- Navigate to Notifications
- Configure their channel preferences
Inheritance
Members can:
- Inherit from family - Use family-wide defaults
- Override - Set custom preferences
This allows:
- Parents to get all notifications
- Children to get fewer notifications
- Different channels per person

Browser Support
Push notifications work in:
- Chrome (desktop and mobile)
- Firefox (desktop)
- Safari (macOS and iOS)
- Edge (desktop)
Enabling Push
- Click Enable Push Notifications in settings
- Browser prompts for permission
- Click Allow
- Test notification is sent
Troubleshooting Push
Not receiving notifications?
- Check browser notification permissions
- Ensure notifications aren't blocked by OS
- Verify Nook has permission in browser settings
- Try disabling and re-enabling
Notifications appearing late?
- Browser may batch notifications
- Check "Do Not Disturb" settings
- Ensure browser is updated
SMS Setup
Phone Verification
- Enter your phone number with country code
- Click Send Code
- Enter the 6-digit code from your text
- Phone is verified and SMS is enabled
Rate Limits
SMS notifications have limits to prevent overuse:
- Maximum 3 verification attempts per hour
- Critical notifications prioritized
Carrier Charges
Standard messaging rates may apply depending on your carrier and plan.
Quiet Hours
Silence all notifications during specified hours:
- Go to Settings > Notifications
- Enable Quiet Hours
- Set start time (e.g., 10:00 PM)
- Set end time (e.g., 7:00 AM)
- Optionally allow urgent notifications to bypass
What Qualifies as Urgent
- Imminent event reminders (within 30 minutes)
- Critical alerts (configurable)

For Busy Parents
Use push notifications for time-sensitive reminders and email for daily digests.
For Work-From-Home
In-app notifications may be sufficient if you're often at the computer.
For On-The-Go
Enable push and SMS for important reminders when away from devices.
For Minimal Interruptions
Use email only, with a daily digest schedule.
