Shopping Lists
Create and manage shopping lists, organized by store section for efficient shopping trips.
Shopping lists in Nook are organized by store section, making your trips efficient. Create lists manually, generate them from meal plans, or combine both approaches.
Creating a List
New Empty List
- Go to Groceries
- Click New List
- Name your list (e.g., "Weekly Shopping", "Costco Run")
- Start adding items
Generate from Meal Plan
- Go to Groceries
- Click Generate from Meal Plan
- Select the date range (this week, next week, etc.)
- Nook creates a list with all ingredients
- Items are organized by category
Adding Items
Quick Add
- Type in the Add item field
- Enter item name
- Press Enter or click Add
- Item is added with smart defaults
With Details
- Click + next to Add item
- Fill in details:
- Item name
- Quantity
- Unit (lbs, oz, each, etc.)
- Category
- Notes
- Click Add
From Staples
- Click Add from Staples
- Check items you need
- Click Add Selected
- Quantities default to your usual amounts
List Organization
Categories
Items are organized by store section:

Auto-Categorization
Nook automatically categorizes common items. For new items, you can:
- Let Nook guess the category
- Manually set the category
- Items remember their category for next time
Reordering
Drag items to change order within categories. Your store layout may differ from defaults.
Shopping Mode
When you're at the store:
Entering Shopping Mode
- Open your list
- Click Start Shopping (or swipe on mobile)
- Interface optimizes for in-store use
Features
- Large checkboxes for easy tapping
- Checked items move to bottom
- Category headers for navigation
- Running total (if prices added)
- Add items on the fly
Checking Items
- Tap to mark as purchased
- Tap again to uncheck
- Long-press for quantity adjustment
Leaving Shopping Mode
Click Done Shopping when finished. You can:
- Clear checked items
- Keep for next time
- Review what was purchased
Sharing Lists
Family Access
All family members see the same lists. When someone:
- Adds an item → everyone sees it
- Checks an item → it's checked for everyone
- Perfect for "add milk when you're out"
Real-Time Sync
Changes sync instantly. If you're both at the store:
- You can divide and conquer
- See what the other person grabbed
- Avoid duplicates
Managing Multiple Lists
Use Cases
- Weekly groceries - Regular shopping
- Warehouse club - Bulk items for Costco/Sam's
- Specialty store - Items from specific stores
- Party shopping - For events
Switching Lists
Use the dropdown at the top of Groceries to switch between active lists.
Archiving Lists
Old lists can be archived:
- Open the list
- Click Archive
- List moves to archive (viewable but not active)
Generated Lists
When generating from meal plans:
What's Included
- All recipe ingredients for planned meals
- Quantities adjusted for serving sizes
- Combined quantities for duplicate items
What's Not Included
- Items you likely have (salt, pepper, oil)
- Customize "always have" items in settings
Editing Generated Lists
After generating:
- Remove items you have
- Add items you need
- Adjust quantities
- Add notes
Combining with Manual Items
Generated lists can have manual items added. Mix meal plan ingredients with other needs.
Tips
Add Items When You Think of Them
Use the mobile app to add items immediately.
Use Notes for Specifics
"Bananas - get green ones" or "Milk - check expiration date"
Create Store-Specific Lists
If you shop at multiple stores, create separate lists for each.
